Dynamic fracture of berylium-bearing bulk metallic glass systems: A cross-technique comparison

چکیده

We report on a detailed comparison between two different experimental techniques used to measure the dynamic initiation fracture toughness KdIC of a bulk metallic glass system (Vitreloy-1) and its b-phase composite. Both the coherent gradient sensing interferometry (CGS) and one-point impact techniques reveal very similar trends in the KdIC– _ K d I relationship for Vitreloy-1. A drastic increase in initiation toughness with the stress intensity rate is observed. By contrast, the one-point impact method shows a relative rate-insensitivity for the KdIC of the b-phase composite. The results are rationalized through a detailed characterization of the failure mechanisms. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fracture Toughness Determination for a Be:ryllium-bearing Bulk Metallic Glass

A class of beryllium-bearing bulk metallic glass alloys has recently been developed at the California Institute of Technology (1). These alloys can be fabricated in the form of large ingots with minimum dimensions on the order of centimeters, which allows valid mechanical tests to be performed on these materials. Such tests were not formerly possible given the small dimensions of earlier metall...

The dynamic compressive behavior of beryllium bearing bulk metallic glasses

In 1993, a new beryllium bearing bulk metallic glass with the nominal composition of Zr41.25Ti13.75Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 was discovered at Caltech. This metallic glass can be cast as cylindrical rods as large as 16 mm in diameter, which permitted specimens to be fabricated with geometries suitable for dynamic testing. For the first time, the dynamic compressive yield behavior of a metallic glass was...

Fracture behavior of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk metallic glass under quasi-static and dynamic compression

Fracture behavior of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk metallic glass was investigated under quasi-static compression at strain rate of 10/s using an Instron testing machine and dynamic split Hopkinson bar (SHPB) compression with strain rate of about 1900–4300/s. Pronounced strain softening, especially past the peak stress, was observed under SHPB tests and compared with the distinct flow serrations under q...

Designing Bulk Metallic Glass Matr ix Composites with High Toughness and Tensile Ductility

Metallic glasses have been the subject of intense scientific study since the 1960s, owing to their unique properties such as high strength, large elastic limit, high hardness, and amorphous microstructure. However, bulk metallic glasses have not been used in the high strength structural applications for which they have so much potential, owing to a highly localized failure mechanism that result...

Fractal in fracture of bulk metallic glass

We investigate the nanoscale periodic corrugation (NPC) structures on the dynamic fracture surface of a typical tough bulk metallic glass, submitted to high-velocity plate impact and scanned by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) of the recorded AFM profiles reveals that the valley landscapes of the NPC are nearly memoryless, characterized by Hurst parameter ...
